On Wednesday, 24th August 2011, David Kibuuka performed his first ever one man show. The show was entitled “Dave Wasn’t Built in a Day” which is quite appropriate for this talented, witty comic whose career in comedy spans seven years long. Having acted in The Pure Monate Show, having written (and starred in) “Bunny Chow”, having featured on comedy DVDs, having been named on Heat Magazines top 100 Hottest Celebrities, having been the foreign correspondent on the LNN Show and having performed in comedy festivals nationwide, it was inevitable that this household name of a comedian would perform his one man show.Cape Town was lucky to be the first city to host his virgin expose.
“Dave Wasn’t Built in a Day” was a one night only performance at On Broadway (44 Long Street, Cape Town) and had a good attendance for the show (of about 75% capacity). Opening for Kibuuka was Lazola Gola (younger brother of comedy giant – Loyiso Gola) and his sharp, witty, intelligent but juxtaposed set was a great appetizer for the entre which was to be a David Kibuuka Steak, medium well.
Although most people consider the perfect steak to be medium, for the purpose of my extended food metaphor, the ultimate compliment I could have paid David Kibuuka would be to say that the his show was “well done” and the worst rating would have been “rare”, so the fact that I gave his show a “medium well” rating means that it was a great start to his run, but there is still some room for improvement.
His material was a compilation of some of his great classics (including his jive about Uganda and how he adapted to South Africa) and some other material I had not seen of his that was woven into a fluid performance. Having always been considered one of South Africa’s wittiest comedic commentaries, Kibuuka proved to this Capetonian audience why he deserved such a title. Although his stage presence is not as commanding as comedians such as Ndumiso Lindi or John Vlismas, his rich content, comic timing and clear delivery was fitting for a comedian and writer whose material outweighs his stage aura.
Lazola Gola was on for about 15 minutes and David Kibuuka was on for just over an hour, with no interval. Although one hour and 15 minutes may seem like a long time for a stand up comedy show, he carried the performance in a way that time seemed to fly by. (Bearing in mind, Trevor Noah’s “Scratch That” was a painful 2 hour long stretch of comedy. Entertaining, but very painful for the audience’s bladders)
Another nice touch to the show was that David Kibuuka had some celebrity audience attendees including Jack Parrow, Ndumiso Lindi and Khan from the Parletones. Kibuuka had a good gag about The Parletones’ “Push Me To the Floor” song which was near the end of his show and tied in very nicely with the flow of his show. The end of his show was a bit weak but overall it was a great start to what could be a great one man show.

Fresh straight from an amazing performance at the Nando’s Comedy festival, The Eastern Cape born Comedian Ndumiso Lindi presents his first one man show HERE I STAND at On Broadway. On for only 3 days.
28-30 August.
Venue: On Broadway, 44 Long St
Time: 8.30pm
Cost: R 85

Known for his trade mark hat, funky urban stylish look and brilliant impersonation of the Madiba Jive, Ndumiso Lindi is regarded as one of South Africa’s top black comedians. An entertainer with flair, Ndumiso’s material is an honest and hilarious observation of everyday life in South Africa, the diversity of South African cultures and how unique black people can be, especially the newer, younger generation. He paints the nation from a young black man’s point of view. His ability to adapt his unique style to diverse audiences is proof that this relatively young performer is blessed with talent and instinct, and his rapid rise is well deserved. This rock-solid stand up act has come a long way in a short time, recently being chosen for the prestigious 46664 series of comedy shows, touring the arenas of South Africa, as well as several African countries, including Nigeria and Ghana.
“When I watch this guy I forget he’s younger than most of the established comics…He’s got such ownership of his stage, and he’s a pleasure to watch and to work with…Keep your eye on this guy, if you can” John Vlismas.

Baxter Golden Arrow Studio – August 1 to 13
Book @ 021 685 7880 / Computicket
The Baxter Theatre celebrates women’s month in August with the return of the hilarious Cracks And the City II comedy show performed by the all-female quartet featuring comedians Shimmy Isaacs, Anne Hirsch, Anthea Thompson and Marianne Thamm.
The Cracks return with a two-week run, from August 1 to 13 in the Baxter Golden Arrow Studio, of their new full-length comedy show, Cracks And The City II, with fresh material, jokes and sketches that are sure to get you laughing as well as thinking. The show is directed by comic whizz, Alan Committie (one of South Africa’s best comedians). Tickets are R100 or R85 for block bookings of more than 10 for the comedy show.
Tyrone August of the Cape Times wrote “the stand-up [comedy] show Cracks and The City is unusual in more ways than one…It features women only, yet none of them feel the need to explicitly address any feminist issues and turn the show into a discourse on what it means to be a woman in South Africa.”
August went on to explain that this quality of the Cracks humour “is an indication of their confidence and strength. They do not feel obliged to wave around any banners or climb on any soap boxes.”
Astrid Stark wrote that Cracks And The City was “an eclectic romp and riot”.
Hey guys… if you are heading to Grahamstown don’t miss out on Dale Amler’s one man show:
